Q. – Tell us about your design process. Do you begin with an initial object or theme as an inspiration?
A. – I always like to start my designs with a rug. Since it’s often the largest decorative piece of any space, I feel like it really sets the tone for the rest of the design.
Q. – What was the most essential goal you wanted to achieve when you initially designed this space?
A. – Overall, I wanted it to really communicate all of the individual attributes that I wanted my child to have. I feel like I accomplished that by putting a great amount of thought into each and every detail that I chose for this room.
Q. – Did you face any unforeseen challenges while creating this space? How did you handle it?
A. – YES. I had a very small budget to work with, so EVERYTHING in this room was either handed down to us, a DIY project, or a bargain find. I’m proud to say that I was able to put thos entire room together for less than $500.
Q. – What was the most exciting/thrilling part of the design process?
A. – Watching it all come together is always my favorite part. Seeing each individual piece come together to form one large, cohesive design is like Christmas morning for me. It makes me immensely proud of my work.
Q. – Any tips or advice you can share with other designers and parents?
A. – As annoying as it sounds, planning out your room ahead of time can save you a huge headache in the future.
If you haphazardly pick out pieces that you think are cute while you’re already out shopping, you may get home and realize that you have a bunch of cute pieces that don’t really go well together or suit your space. And you might blow your budget in the process.
Getting a plan together will save you time and money, and will help you create a beautifully designed space that you’re proud to show off to your friends.

Q. – Tell us about your design process. Do you begin with an initial object or theme as an inspiration?
A. – When it came time to really start putting my son’s nursery together, I actually started finding my inspiration through Instagram. I’d found some Mama-owned shops that I’d been following for a while because I loved the beautiful and unique products they created.
I started paying attention to their items that were more ‘boyish’ and began to see a pattern with the things I liked – they were mostly monochrome – black, white, gray, and natural wood tones, and had a whimsical edge to them.
When I think of boys, I think of the outdoors, and starting pulling together items that featured mountains, camping, and various woodland creatures.
Q. – What was the most essential goal you wanted to achieve when you initially designed this space?
A. – I really wanted a unique, eclectic mix of items that weren’t traditional boy nursery themes. I also needed the room to fit with the style of the rest of our home, which has a modern farmhouse vibe, which was actually quite opposite of all of the things I was loving for this space.
Then I had the idea of the wood planked wall, and thought that would tie it all together. Ultimately I wanted a space not only that I would love, but that my son would grow to love as he became older and more aware of his surroundings.
Q. – Did you face any unforeseen challenges while creating this space? How did you handle it?
A. – When I found out I was having a baby boy, I’ll be honest and say that I felt a little sense of panic when I thought about decorating a nursery. Before my daughter was born, I felt like I had a clear vision of the type of nursery I wanted for her, and had so much fun bringing that vision to life.
But a boy’s room felt so foreign to me; I’ve grown up with all sisters and boy things were just not on my radar! His room is also the smallest in the house, so I had to really make the best use of the space.
I used book and toy shelves that hung on the wall to help free up floor space, and kept all the other furniture pretty minimal.
Q. – What was the most exciting/thrilling part of the design process?
A. – For me it was finding so many unique items from small shops on Instagram, and then when it finally came time to put the room together, getting to see how well they all worked with each other.
The planked wall and the decal wall added such a great wow-factor too!
Q. – Any tips or advice you can share with other designers and parents?
A. – Think outside the big-box stores! There are so many incredible small shops that make beautiful and unique decor pieces.
Look through Instagram hashtags, and when you find photos of items you like, be sure to tap the photos to check for sources, or ask the original poster where they found an item.
Not only are you supporting small businesses (which are typically run by other Moms), but you are making your space truly your own with special pieces that your child will grow to love.

A. – I usually find a piece that inspires me. With this design I wanted a natural, woodland design that would grow with my son.
Q. – What was the most essential goal you wanted to achieve when you initially designed this space?
A. – This is a small room and I wanted it to feel light and airy. It is welcoming and not too baby-ish.
Q. – Did you face any unforeseen challenges while creating this space? How did you handle it?
A. – nitially we filled in the space between the shiplap with white paint but then changed our approach because the white paint didn’t allow for as much contrast. So the bottom two rows have paint between them, the rest we left without and it looked a lot better.
Q. – What was the most exciting/thrilling part of the design process?
A. – Seeing the large photo come together in such a beautiful way. It was exactly what I had envisioned.
Q. – Any tips or advice you can share with other designers and parents?
A. – Come up with a plan. Measure twice and cut once. Don’t be afraid to try something new.
