You already know that parenting presents a new set of crazy adventures every day, so it makes sense that your next DIY project might include some adventure kids room decor.
When designing a themed bedroom for children, you usually wind up in one of two camps: no good ideas, or way too many good ideas. Either way, that can be really frustrating.The planning stages supposed to be fun, not overwhelming.
With this in mind, we went out in search of some truly excellent examples of adventure kids room decor across social media and various design blogs. What we found absolutely knocked our socks off, and we have a feeling you’re going to feel the same way.

Dyana Young ~ @nannakakes
"I’m a stay at home mom to two children. I love changing rooms, too frequently according to my husband. Haha. I bake specialty cakes as a side business and it’s something I love to do.
Q. – Tell us about your design process. Do you begin with an initial object or theme as an inspiration?
A. – I knew I wanted to do a theme with deer for my son’s nursery. I seen the wooden deer picture at hobby lobby and knew I needed it and wanted it on the main wall.
Q. – What was the most essential goal you wanted to achieve when you initially designed this space?
A. – His room is small so I wanted to keep most of it light but wanted an accent wall as well. I think the stripes make the room appear longer. I also wanted something that would grow with him as he got older.
Q. – Did you face any unforeseen challenges while creating this space? How did you handle it?
A. – I had no clue how to paint the stripes but after reading a few blog posts and searching Pinterest, I decided to go for it. It was actually easier than expected.
Q. – What was the most exciting/thrilling part of the design process?
A. – Seeing my vision come together was exciting. Normally when you have a vision it never works out quite the way you want, but with this room, I think it turned out even better.
Q. – Any tips or advice you can share with other designers and parents?
A. – would say to do your research, and read other people’s experiences. Never be afraid to try something 🙂
Ashley Burnett ~ @fontainefarmhouse
Hi I’m Ashley Burnett! I live in the heartland of Kentucky, where you can find me blogging, enjoying the outdoors, renovating my little ranch-style farmhouse, and making the best of life as a busy working mama to three. My home is full of shiplap and the pitter patter of little feet, and it’s honestly my favorite place to be.
Q. – Tell us about your design process. Do you begin with an initial object or theme as an inspiration?
A. – Everything in the room is a subtle nod to Peter Pan. Since the nursery is shared by my toddler son and infant daughter, I felt like Peter Pan was a neutral theme that would fit both of them!
Q. – What was the most essential goal you wanted to achieve when you initially designed this space?
A. – didn’t want it overloaded with “stuff”. I wanted to create a clean, simple, peaceful space that could easily grow up with them both.
Q. – Did you face any unforeseen challenges while creating this space? How did you handle it?
A. – Finding the perfect balance between feminine and masculine was a challenge, and at first the decor definitely felt too masculine. I found balance by adding a felt flower mobile over the crib, a mermaid statue on the floating shelves, and some greenery throughout!
Q. – What was the most exciting/thrilling part of the design process?
A. – My favorite thing was finally getting a chance to use one of my Grandparents vintage Disney Gobel figurines in a room! The Peter Pan displayed on the floating shelves was purchased back when Disney World first opened!
Q. – Any tips or advice you can share with other designers and parents?
A. – If you want to design around a theme, but don’t want it to cross the line into tacky territory, I suggest keeping your big items like walls, rugs and furniture neutral and then layer in subtle hints.
Charlotte Bishop ~ @Our_home_in_wiltshire
My name's Charlotte and I live just outside of Bath in the UK. I’m a mum of two boys currently on a career break from my job working from home for my husbands business. My husband and I work as a great team bringing up our boys and renovating our home!
Q. – Tell us about your design process. Do you begin with an initial object or theme as an inspiration?
A. – The inspiration came from my (at the time) 2 year old! I was trying to think of a theme and I said to him ‘what would you like in your new room?’ And he said ‘animals’. So I thought, OK, I’ll do a safari theme.
Q. – What was the most essential goal you wanted to achieve when you initially designed this space?
A. – Essentially, I wanted the room to be vibrant, fun and educational and I achieved this by finding a beautiful bright wall mural with a map filled with animals around the continent.
Q. – Did you face any unforeseen challenges while creating this space? How did you handle it?
A. – I was 8 months pregnant when I decorated this room, so I had to have regular breaks!
Q. – What was the most exciting/thrilling part of the design process?
A. – Knowing that my son would absolutely love his new bedroom! He was so excited for his first night in there, it’s something I’ll never forget.
Q. – Any tips or advice you can share with other designers and parents?
A. – If you’re going to invest in a new bedroom for your child – make sure the room grows with them. You don’t want to be redecorating a year after!
Nicole Roberts ~ @my_persimmon_home
"My name is Nicole and I'm a mum of 2 who is slowly getting my house dome up as well as juggling work. My passion is interior design and I find myself getting lost for house creating moodboards.
Q. – Tell us about your design process. Do you begin with an initial object or theme as an inspiration?
A. – For my kids playroom I started with a theme which was rainbows colours. Everything bright and fun.
Q. – What was the most essential goal you wanted to achieve when you initially designed this space?
A. – Organised storage that was easily accessible and easy to tidy away. I love kids making mess but also love to know exactly where it all goes after.
Q. – Did you face any unforeseen challenges while creating this space? How did you handle it?
A. – Yes finding the perfect space for all the storage was hard as we needed a lot but the room wasn’t the biggest.
Q. – What was the most exciting/thrilling part of the design process?
A. – Seeing it all come to life bit by bit as well as the kids reactions to all the colours.
Q. – Any tips or advice you can share with other designers and parents?
A. – Make it as fun as possible as well as practice. Kids love to see their artwork displayed as well. I think that the best way to achieve the most use out the play room is to let the kids help pick colours and designs.
Anita Roll ~ @anita_roll
I'm a decorative artist working out of Indiana as well as traveling nationally for over 10 years painting in private homes and model homes for building companies. I love the process of creating artwork for children's rooms especially when it is something they have been hoping for. I firmly believe every child should wake up in a room that makes them happy.
Q. – Tell us about your design process. Do you begin with an initial object or theme as an inspiration?
A. – Yes I generally start with a theme after brainstorming with the designer or homeowner. I also work with the color scheme going into the room so that the artwork or mural is cohesive with the decor.
Q. – What was the most essential goal you wanted to achieve when you initially designed this space?
A. – I wanted it to be fun and also something that could bring and outdoor element to the room.
Q. – Did you face any unforeseen challenges while creating this space? How did you handle it?
A. – I actually was working from some fabric samples and it turned out the color was a little off from the fabric that eventually went into the room. I changed some of the mountain colors and then it clicked.
Q. – What was the most exciting/thrilling part of the design process?
A. – It’s very fun to see all the furniture and window treatments come in after I’ve painted. All together it really makes the room come alive.
Q. – Any tips or advice you can share with other designers and parents?
A. – Don’t be afraid to go big. Especially with artwork. Statement pieces can really add excitement to the room you are designing.
